TEACHERS GAIN WELL DESERVED RESPECT WITH U.P. ASSESSMENT

Seventy new public school teacher applicants took the qualifying exam carried out by young and competent University of the Philippines professors based in Diliman, Quezon City through the meticulous supervision of Dr. Letecia Pe?ano-Ho. The Educators Skills Assessment and Evaluation Program was held at Sison Central Integrated School on June 06, 2010 with the presence of the District Supervisor, Dr. Eliza O. Rosino, and the school principal, Dr. Violeta O. Liwanag. The annual assessment was initiated by the 5th District Representative, Hon. Mark O. Cojuangco in 2009 and has since become an integral part of the education system for the municipality of Sison that has a binding agreement of the Department of Education.

Only in its third year, the program already induced a better outlook of Sison public schools. Whereas Sison public schools used to be looked down upon as being below the standards of private schools, the program has elevated their reputation to be at par if not better. Already, the higher standard in teacher qualification in Sison has attracted some teachers previously employed in private schools. In addition, those that pass the assessment exam gain confidence and self-repect; characteristics that usually transfers to their effectiveness in the classroom.

,p>Teachers who fail the exam have numerous opportunities to retake the test and the conductors are affable but could be very serious in dealing with constant flunkers with reccomendations to shift to another profession that fit them other than education. While the new evaluation process may seem harsh, it is a winning situation for the teachers, the town and most importantly, the students. The teachers gain well deserved pride and confidence in their profession, the town gains teachers of caliber and the students gain a higher quality education.

Proof of the improved status of Sison public schools is the fact that teachers who were employed in other municipalities or provinces but are natives of Sison now want to take the chance of being qualified in their hometown. In addition, the influx of pupils and students into the public schools in Sison corroborates the effectiveness of the program because it means that the educational standards are rising and producing better qualified teachers and students.
